EXCURSIONS AND CAMPS

At Gowrie St, we value our excursions and camps so highly that we made the decision to cover the cost of all camps and excursions in the hope this would remove any barrier for students to attend. We plan our excursions and camps alongside our classroom curriculum as we know that when students extend their learning beyond the classroom they get a more holistic education.

We are finding that more and more students are not attending these camps and excursions.

When we book an excursion or camp once we have confirmed numbers we must pay for that number of attendees. When we confirm numbers we must provide the number of staff based on that number for supervision requirements. This means we are sending staff on excursions and camps, of whose extra time the school must pay for, for nothing.

This year the school has lost many thousands of dollars due to students saying they are coming on camps and excursions and then not coming on the day. We had 24 students not come on a recent excursion- this is equivalent to one whole class and we had booked a bus to accommodate them- of which the school paid $1100 which is not refundable.

This means we are going to need to review our camps and excursions policy to see if it is still viable for us to run these experiences, that we believe are important, but are not being well attended, and that we are losing money on.

We would love to hear from families about how you feel about camps and excursions and if you believe they are beneficial experiences for your child/children. It would be great if you could spare a minute to complete our survey as this will help us make our decision. It only has four questions!

You can complete the survey HERE
